Building Local Capacity for Coastal Protection

Through the Local Climate Adaptive Living (LoCAL) Facility, Intercoastal is supporting Solomon Islands Provincial and Ministry of Provincial Government and Institutional Strengthening (MPGIS) engineers to strengthen their capacity to plan, design and implement small-scale coastal protection projects.

The program introduces provincial engineers to climate risks affecting coastal areas and builds understanding of key coastal engineering concepts that can be applied to projects within their own provinces.

From Coastal Risk to Practical Design

Effective small-scale coastal protection begins with understanding the coastal environment and the climate risks affecting individual sites.

Intercoastal is providing guidance to Provincial and MPGIS engineers on the design of coastal protection projects proposed for funding through the LoCAL Facility.

The training connects key coastal engineering concepts with their practical application, helping engineers build the knowledge needed to plan and design projects within the varied coastal environments of the Solomon Islands.

Building Capacity for Locally Led Delivery

A key focus of the program is ensuring that technical knowledge can be applied beyond the training itself.

By strengthening the capacity of provincial engineers to understand coastal climate risks and apply key engineering concepts, the program supports their ability to plan, design and implement small-scale coastal protection projects within their own provinces.

The engineering knowledge developed through the program can continue to support locally led coastal protection projects within the provinces.

Intercoastal’s Role
