Strengthening Coastal Resilience in Nauru

Nauru’s distinctive raised-atoll coastline presents its own set of challenges for coastal adaptation and protection.

Under the Coastal Area Resilience Enhancement for Nauru (CARE4N) project, Intercoastal provided coastal engineering support and program design to help shape locally delivered pilot coastal protection projects suited to Nauru’s coastal environment.

CARE4N is supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) under the regional Resilience Enhancement through Adaptation in the Pacific (REAP) Program.

Understanding Nauru’s Coastal Environment

Developing appropriate coastal protection requires an understanding of both the physical coastline and the assets and communities that interact with it.

Intercoastal undertook a rapid-deployment site visit in Nauru, combining coastal asset inspection with stakeholder meetings and the assimilation of available data.

Together, these activities informed the development of pilot coastal protection projects appropriate to Nauru’s unique raised-atoll setting.

From Site Assessment to Pilot Projects

The engagement brought together observations from the site visit, inspection of existing coastal assets, stakeholder input and available coastal information.

This information was used to support program design and shape locally delivered pilot coastal protection projects tailored to conditions in Nauru.

The approach connects coastal engineering assessment with practical project development, supporting coastal protection measures grounded in the island’s local setting.

Supporting Locally Delivered Coastal Resilience

A key element of CARE4N is the development of coastal protection projects that can be delivered locally.

Intercoastal’s technical input helped translate site observations, existing information and stakeholder engagement into the early development of pilot projects suited to Nauru’s coastline.
