Northern Fogafale Emergency Works — Akimoa Coastal Protection
Akimoa, Northern Fogafale, Funafuti, Tuvalu
Hall Contracting / Government of Tuvalu | 2025–2026
Northern Fogafale, where coastal protection works at Akimoa are addressing recurring lagoon-side flooding along Te Auala O Tuvalu Road.
Protecting a Critical Connection in Northern Fogafale
A 520-metre stretch of Northern Fogafale’s main road, Te Auala O Tuvalu Road, is regularly affected by lagoon waves overtopping the Akimoa shoreline during storms and elevated water levels.
The road provides a critical connection between Fogafale’s Northern Arm and the central village, giving residents access to food supplies, medical services and the port. Recurring inundation also threatens the long-term condition of the road itself.

Coastal protection delivered with Hall Contracting
Coastal protection works along the Akimoa lagoon shoreline beside Northern Fogafale’s main road.
Responding to Recurring Coastal Flooding
The project is designed to reduce nuisance flooding caused by lagoon waves overtopping the Akimoa shoreline during storms and periods of elevated water levels.
With funding from the Government of Taiwan, the Government of Tuvalu engaged Hall Contracting under a Design and Construct contract to protect this vulnerable section of lagoon shoreline.
Coastal protection works integrated into the existing shoreline environment at Akimoa.
Design Through Delivery
Intercoastal provides coastal protection design services to Hall Contracting and assists the Government of Tuvalu with construction supervision and contract management through implementation.
The project brings design and delivery together to address a pressing coastal flooding issue in a remote atoll environment.
